I was working with my student Jessica Esfandiary initially on developing a scene for her demo reel. During this process we looked at where she wanted to go with her career. As we were discussing the scene it became apparent that the better option would be to turn the 1 scene into a short film so that she could get her SAG CARD. The key to this... making sure all the other actors in the film are already in the Union and then Jessica could Taft Hartley herself. There are several qualifications for doing this so make sure you check with the SAG/AFTRA Production Center for New Media Signatory rules and regulations before starting your own project.
HOW CHLOE'S SONG CAME TO BE!!!
Jessica and I took a 2 page demo reel scene and worked it into a 13 page short film. It went from a 2 person scene to a huge cast with 9 locations and Jessica starring in every single scene. It was quite a process but also a great learning experience for Jessica. After the film was shot, Jessica and I sat down with Phil Gibson at Video Solutions to cut a great film which was ready to be entered into Film Festivals. Jessica walked away with a great movie, tons of footage for her demo reel, and her SAG/AFTRA Union card. Unexpectedly, during this entire process Jessica discovered that she really loved producing since she was the one dealing with SAG on all the paperwork, insurance and contracts. She has recently helped produce several other projects and is loving her new role as producer.
